First of all, I am very thankful for the faithfulness of our God (unlike me - who cannot keep a stated goal to keep this blog current). :o) Truthfully and seriously, though, God is good and has been a faithful leader and provider for our family. As we sat around our table at dinner - just the five of us - it was neat to reflect on the history of God's guidance, provision, and protection, in my own life and for and of our family.

Secondly, I thank and praise my God for a loving and faithful husband who leads us well and three (Lord willing, four, by next June) beautiful children who are all showing signs of loving the Lord. This really is a continuation on my first bit of thanks, because it ties in with God's faithfulness. As I look at the family God has blessed me with and consider my role in this whole deal, I recall - I don't deserve this...I am rather unworthy of blessing in light of my sinful heart. I was born an enemy of God and He blesses me like this???

To digress a bit, Jesse has been leading our whole family together in memorizing some of the Psalms together. Because of this I have been thinking about the gospel in slightly different terms. As a child I probably would have never told anyone that you could find the gospel in the Psalms, but it's definitely there! Check it out...

In Psalm 1 I have come to grips with the fact that I am not the "blessed man" who delights in God's word, but rather one of the wicked whose way is doomed to perish. But I long to be counted righteous and live - that my way may be known by the LORD! Psalm 2 provides hope, though it begins with the nations raging against God and Jesus (to my amazement also quoted by the disciples in Acts with reference to Jesus' crucifixion). I am warned as to how I should approach God - "worship the LORD with reverence and rejoice with trembling. Do homage to the Son..." and my hope of the gospel in these terms is this: "How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!"

God has given a way for the wicked - God's sinful, undeserving enemies - to obtain the blessing of the righteous man, Jesus - by taking refuge in Jesus! I praise God for this blessing and His many other blessings! He pours out His blessings on me as on His own Son, as I have simply taken refuge in His Son. And this gift remains for any who would have it: "How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!"

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5fPOHQNRTG4/TtAFHnn_NqI/AAAAAAAABuo/9EjK0x1lfNM/s1600/100_7128.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; 80% that is, of our family members had roles in the wedding ceremony - though these participated at 100%! I'll give a brief synopsis of Yuri and Donnalee's big day, from my (Jesse's) perspective. It all started when the girls left the house, leaving the boys to eat their breakfast without any opportunity to give advice on how hair should be worn, etc. The boys then took their time getting to the church, where the piano player (Jesse) got the ring bearer (Jesse Daniel) and his look-alike (Perry) dressed. The boys played for about an hour in the nursery, during which I had to prepare Jesse Daniel for his important job carrying a pillow to the front of the sanctuary. He was afraid to be separated from Diana and me, but he learned to say, 'God is with me.' It wasn't too much longer before we saw what the girls had been up to all morning - they really were beautiful! My personal favorite was the Matron of Honor (sister of the bride Diana), though just as beautiful was one of the three flower girls (Anne). The ceremony was Christ-honoring, and it was exciting to witness the union of a God-fearing couple. We don't have many photos of the reception, probably because Diana and I were too busy square dancing (!) to worry about taking pictures.

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TEx2MY4jHJI/TnfycPI75uI/AAAAAAAABrc/__nV8hk-feM/s1600/100_7090.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; Instead, they requested rhyming couplets. The above photo is the bride and groom celebrating their opportunity to eat dessert without any more interruptions by aspiring poets - I've included my interruption below:

<div style="font-family: Calibri; related. To the left we have the Myers family aviators - Easter version. Anne and Jesse Daniel enjoy asking Perry, "Where's your airplane?" (okay - so do I.) :o) This is because Perry has been fascinated with seeing and hearing airplanes lately, and now he makes sounds and motions to imitate them.

Jesse has been leading our family through the gospel of Matthew lately, and we've talked some about Jesus' exhortation: "He who has ears; let him hear." Many of the people he addressed had dull hearts, closed eyes, and ears that could barely hear. However he said to his disciples,

"But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it." (Matthew 13:16-17)

This Easter season is one of many praises for our family. We celebrate the resurrection of Jesus with all believers. In addition, Saturday we celebrated Anne's first new-birthday. It was the day before Easter last year that she confessed to God that she was a sinner and that she believed Jesus died and rose again so that she could be forgiven of sin and have a relationship with God. It continues to be our prayer that Jesse Daniel and little Perry would grow to have eyes to see and ears to hear more than just airplanes, but also the living Word of God. And we trust God, that in time, they will. Happy Ears-ta-hear!

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n3C01K5XIjU/TbVm4wxutUI/AAAAAAAABjY/PtB7q5KkTj8/s1600/100_6866.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; This morning we watched Pinocchio. Jesse was studying; Perry basically played the whole time; Jesse Daniel hung on for a little while. It was really just Anne and I who sat through the whole thing together.

I can't remember the last time I saw Pinocchio, but now having children (and the formation of their worldviews) to think about, I look at a lot of things in life...differently. This morning as Anne and I enjoyed experiencing the formation, development, climax, and resolution of a good story together, I made some mental notes of some things to discuss with her after the movie. Anne is a good sport and enjoys talking about our experiences together, so she willingly participated in a good discussion following the movie. It is some of the content and fruit of that discussion I'd like to share.

We first discussed the lyrics of "When You Wish upon a Star" - there was a music video of this song that followed up the movie, so it was fresh:

When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you

If your heart is in your dream
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do

Fate is kind
She brings to those who love
The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longing

Like a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams come true
Anne was pretty quick to find error in this way of thinking; stars don't have any power to grant anything. Who has power? God has power. God made the stars we'd be tempted to wish upon. So don't waste time wishing on stars - seek the God who made them.

"Ah," you might say, "no one really believes that stars have power. It's just a fairy tale. Don't make a big deal about it." I'll say this to my shame; though I grew up reading the Bible and believing in God who answers prayer, I observed the effectiveness of the little ditty Geppetto recites which triggers the star-fairy's response...

"Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight.
I wish I may, I wish I might, have this wish I wish tonight."
...and I used it often to wish for the desires of my heart. Hey, if it worked....right?!? Sigh...cute and innocent, maybe - but a waste nonetheless. Cute little wasted words and misplaced trust.

Looking over the rest of the words, there's a lot more wrong with the thinking behind the lyrics, but that's the main part Anne and I covered.

Happy Birthday, Devon!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;
